OverDrive for iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch)

iosOverview

iOS (Apple) devices come in three types: iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, from a single manufacturer.  They are full-color touchscreen devices, and can be used to access the web, run apps, take pictures and video, stream music, and almost anything else a computer can do.  The main difference between an iPhone and an iPod touch is the ability to make phone calls.  When using an iOS device with OverDrive, all functions can be completed within the app, though some patrons prefer to complete the search and checkout processes on a computer for the larger screen.  The device used to create this guide is an iPad Mini with the latest version of iOS.  Some older devices may have older versions of the OverDrive app, so instructions for the app may vary.

Quick Tips

  • If OverDrive titles do not download to the app as expected, go to menu>files and make sure file downloads are turned on. When users engage “airplane mode” on their devices, file downloads get turned off. However, when the device is taken out of airplane mode, the file downloads do not toggle back on automatically.
  • If the battery seems to be draining quickly, try closing some apps. In iOS 7, double-press the home button. When the list of apps comes up, swipe each to the top or bottom to close it.
